2 Minute Movies: My Approach to Wedding Photography
Written by Andi Watson on 19 Apr 2011
The main focus of Andi Watson Photography is shooting weddings. I love photographing weddings, it's the best part of my job. The bride & groom probably see more of their photographer than most of their guests and so it really is a privilege.
Here's a 2 Minute Movie about my approach to shooting a wedding, in particular the shots of the bride & groom (I wanted to talk about all the other aspects of wedding photography but there just wasn't time - I'm already over my 2 minutes!).
2 Minute Movies: The Wedding Guests

In last week's 2 Minute Movie I spoke of my approach to photographing the bride & groom, and I followed that up with a blog of how I prepare for the group shots. The third part of shooting a wedding, particularly for a photographer shooting in a reportage style, is shots of the guests. I like to take informal shots that help to tell the story of the day, and give people an idea of what the atmosphere was like at the wedding. But rather than write about that, I thought I'd talk about it in a 2 Minute Movie!
Enjoy.
American Dream Wedding - Sneak Peak
Written by Andi Watson on 02 Jun 2011
Getting out to America to shoot my first overseas wedding proved harder than I thought it would. My life has never before been impacted directly by a volcano, but Iceland's latest eruption meant that my flight was cancelled twice. I was already starting to mentally draft the "I'm so sorry I can't photograph your wedding after all" email when I was booked onto a rescheduled flight and made it just in time!
I'm so glad I did as the wedding of Jae & Rubie was something truly special, and I was privileged to be part of it. The ceremony was the most spiritual I have ever attended, and the reception was the craziest!
I think it's fair to describe the bride & groom as "fun loving", and that has certainly come out in the photographs. Here's a sneak peak, with plenty more to come down the line!

Pre-Wedding Shoot: Jason & Claire
Written by Andi Watson on 06 Jun 2011
At the end of this month I have the privilege of photographing the wedding of Jason & Claire at Orocco Pier in Queensferry, Edinburgh. It's wonderful taking pictures of two people who are clearly in love - as a wedding photographer it's all about capturing those little moments that a couple share together. As I've said in this Notebook many times before, this works best when the couple are just being themselves and acting naturally. However, like many people I know, Jason & Claire are not big fans of having their picture taken and so we took the opportunity to have a quick Pre-Wedding shoot at the venue in order to help them feel more relaxed on the big day itself.

It was definitely a successful trip. Thankfully, the couple had a great time and it helped them know what to expect when we take the wedding photographs. It also gave us some great photographs!

The backdrop to several of the photos was the spectacular Forth Rail Bridge. Jason & Claire are hoping to get married on the beach just outside of Orocco Pier, which will be a wonderful setting. Let's just hope the weather is good!

Check back with the Notebook in the beginning of July for some photographs of the wedding itself, hopefully in lovely sunshine!

Claire & Jason - Queensferry Wedding
Written by Andi Watson on 27 Jul 2011
Last month I shot a beautiful wedding at Orocco Pier in Queensferry, Edinburgh. Claire & Jason are a wonderful couple. Throughout the photographs they were very much up for a laugh which made for a very relaxed day. I was glad nothing too stressful happened as Rebecca was assisting me, and at that time was 8 months pregnant, and we wouldn't have wanted to overshadow Claire's big day by having a baby at the venue!
Just like in their Engagement Shoot we used the Forth Rail Bridge as a backdrop to many of the photos. There are great views of the bridge from Orocco Pier and it just added something a little bit different to the images.
The rain just about held off which meant Claire & Jason were able to have their ceremony out on the beach. This was the first time I'd photographed a beach ceremony and I really enjoyed it. It certainly gave proceedings a different atmosphere being outside rather than inside a dark church.
All in all it was a fantastic day!

Summer & Pete’s Wedding
Written by Andi Watson on 15 Aug 2011
I know some photographers who refuse to photograph weddings as they find the whole event just too stressful. Luckily I don't feel the same way - I genuinely enjoy the drama and excitement of the day. . .I don't think I'd be able to do this job if I didn't! However, I have to admit that I found last week's wedding a little more stressful then normal. This had nothing to do with the couple (Summer & Pete were a delight to photograph!) but was down to the fact that Rebecca was 6 days overdue and our wee baby could be born at any minute! Things then got more stressful when I got a text from Bec saying that she was going to be induced later that evening! Thankfully I managed to focus enough to capture some great photos of the day, and still got home in time to witness the birth of my beautiful wee boy (photos of him coming soon!).
Having a Plan B is always crucial in wedding photography, and so I had my fellow photographer and good friend Alan Davidson along with me to help capture the day. The wedding took place at Lochside House Hotel in Ayrshire which is a stunning venue. The rain held off long enough for us to get all our photographs outside, which was great as there is some lovely views from the hotel grounds.
Summer had help getting ready from her lovely band of bridesmaids and Pete looked very proud, and rightly so. It was a very emotional ceremony with both bride & groom struggling to hold back the tears. Always nice to see a groom in touch with his emotions!
Here are some highlights from the day. For more photos of Summer & Pete's wedding head over to the Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Andi-Watson-Photography/117035998333962
